IPCOP: MTU

May 8th, 2009 |

It’s fairly simple to change the MTU on a IPCOP powered system.

- Login to your IPCOP via SSH
- Edit the file /etc/rc.d/rc.local with a editor of your choice (for example VI: vi /etc/rc.d/rc.local)
- Add the line: /sbin/ifconfig eth0 mtu 1400 (where ‘eth0′ is the network interface you want to configure and ‘1400′ the mtu number)
- Save the file and reboot IPCOP

Btw. if you don’t want to change the MTU permanently use >>/sbin/ifconfig eth0 mtu 1400<< on the shell. After a reboot the original MTU will be used again.

Android Coding Tutorial

March 9th, 2009 |

Android is till now only on one handset available and the G1 didn’t arrive on shelves in SA yet.
But Android is worth a look - in the second half of 2009 more Android powered mobiles will be available, LG, Motorola and others showed interest and even a Netbook with Android was spotted at CeBit in Germany.
The Android Market allows customers to purchase applications for their mobile, interesting for any developers who want to make some extra bucks.

android software development

A good way to start is a article on arstechnica called Dream(sheep++): A developer’s introduction to Google Android.

Second step should be a classic: “Hello World!”

Another good read is this article at mobiforge.com.

Btw. we offer as one of the only companies in SA iPhone and Android application development. Drop us a message to find out more!

How to become an iPhone Developer

February 11th, 2009 |

The Guardian published an article How to become an iPhone developer in eight easy steps - quite a good read.
The eight steps are:

  • Buy a Mac
  • Down the SDK
  • Learn Objective C
  • Start writing something
  • Sign-up as a developer
  • Prepare for a few weeks of work
  • Submit your app
  • Adapt, market and survive

The most complicated part is definitely the last one. It is not easy to get attention with 22.000+ programs and games in the appstore…

Gmail Chat GTalk - Family? Coworkers?

February 4th, 2009 |

What’s happening today with GTalk?
I’ve got strange new buddies online. It was the “Coworkers” this morning now it’s the “Family”. Who’s next? ‘Boss’? ‘Batman’? ‘Larry Page’?

gmail chat

Is this a sign for new features? After “Latitude” and “Move-To” earlier today some more new features?
We’ll see!

SSH Alias

January 12th, 2009 |

We have to use SSH very often to manage and tweak servers.
But it is a bit of a pain to type in the long command like

ssh -l username@verylongdomainname.com

This is where SSH Alias can save a lot of time. To create a SSH Alias edit the local ssh config file with the editor of your choice, here for example VI:

vi ~/.ssh/config

Now you have to add an alias in the form of:

Host aliasname
HostName yourdomainname.com
User yourusername

You can add here as many aliases as you need. After saving the file you can connect with the following command:

ssh aliasname

Much easier, ai?
